Training Programs for Dogs

"Man (or woman) is a dog's best friend."

This is how we think the quote should read. There is nothing quite comparable to the feeling of connection one experiences when they break through the species language barrier and begin to truly communicate with their dog. Establishing this level of communication is paramount to beginning any training program, and is a skill you will spend much time fostering during any dog training program with College for Pets.

What We Can Offer You:

We're happy to come to your home to provide training, or you may come to our office: the choice is yours.

Playgroup

As of Friday 5/15/09 the White Mountain College for Pets Saturday Playgroup is on Summer hiatus. We will resume at some point in the fall.
Check the blog often for Summer hikes and other activities. These items will be posted in our periodic newsletters as well.

Have a great summer!

On Saturday mornings a group of dogs and their owners gather for a social hour. Would you like to join us?

The Pemi Youth Center on Main Street in Plymouth, NH provides a convenient location for us to gather. The group runs from 9:45 am - 10:45 am. Your dog must be neutered, housebroken up to date on it's Rabies, Distemper and Canine Cough vaccinations and can not show any aggression towards people or dogs.

If this describes your dog, sign up for our next playgroup!

Canine Good Citizen

We have all seen out of control dogs. Perhaps you have avoided having guest over or taking your dog for a walk due to his lack of appropriate social skills. Started in 1989 by the American Kennel Club, CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test will receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

The required 10 test items are:

  • Accepting a friendly stranger
  • Sitting politely for petting
  • Appearance and grooming
  • Walking on a loose lead
  • Walking through a crowd
  • Sit and Down on command and Staying in place
  • Coming when called
  • Reaction to another dog
  • Reaction to distraction
  • Supervised separation

Animal Assisted Therapy

An Animal Assisted Therapy Dog refers to a dog trained to provide affection and comfort to people in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, mental institutions and schools. Any therapy training begins with earning the Canine Good Citizen certificate. We train using a combination of material from both the Delta Society and Therapy Dog International; the two largest certifying animal assisted therapy organization in the US. In addition to the CGC test item, your dog will learn:

  • Support mild pressure to his shoulders equal to that of a normal weight person, off balance
  • Ignore food and toy distractions in response to a Leave It command
  • Tolerate: yelling, extended hugging, staggering people and exuberant and clumsy petting
  • Not to jump on people
  • Turn a light switch on and off

Service Dog Skills

A Service Dog is trained to perform skills specific to it's disabled handler's particular needs. Examples include:

  • Turn a light on or off
  • Pull on or off socks, gloves, etc
  • Bark to indicate a knock at the door, telephone ringing, etc
  • Bring the telephone to the handler
  • Brace to support and unbalanced handler
  • Lay it's head gently on the handlers body
  • Bring various items by name to the handler
  • Pull a wheelchair
