A Service Dog is trained to perform skills specific to their mentally or physically disabled handler's particular needs. Let us help you achieve certification for your dog. A small sampling of skills include:

  • Turn a light on or off
  • Pull on or off socks, gloves, etc
  • Bark to indicate a knock at the door, telephone ringing, etc
  • Bring the telephone to the handler
  • Brace to support an unbalanced handler
  • Lay their head gently on the handlers body
  • Bring various items by name to the handler
  • Pull a wheelchair
  • Locate and alert another person that the handler is in need of assistance
     

Animal Assisted Therapy Prepchildbookdog

An Animal Assisted Therapy Dog refers to a dog trained to provide affection and comfort to people in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, mental institutions and schools. A.A.T. training begins with your dog earning the Canine Good Citizen certificate. In addition to the C.G.C. test items; your dog will learn the following items in preparation for his A.A.T. test:

  • Support mild pressure to his shoulders equal to that of a normal weight person, off balance
  • Ignore food and toy distractions in response to a Leave It command
  • Tolerate: yelling, extended hugging, staggering people and exuberant and clumsy petting
  • Not to jump on people
  • Turn a light switch on and off
